La culture maker en bibliothèque : au-delà des machines /Maker culture in librairies : more then just machines

Description

This activity will be a virtual discussion panel (bilingual) during which practitioners working in Fab labs and other maker space within libraries will be able to share their experiences and knowledge with the participants. We would like to bring together stakeholders from Quebec, the rest of Canada and possibly from other country in order to have diverse point of view.

The objective of this panel is to help practitioners realize the importance of promoting the maker culture and philosophy, in particular the Fab lab charter, so that maker projects in libraries can fulfill their potential. Too often, library projects focus on the acquisition and implementation of new material (often machine tools) without integrating a broader reflection on the role of the library and the librarian in the advancement of maker culture within the population. Beyond providing access to material, libraries should actively promote a philosophy that places the learner at the heart and in control of their learning process while facilitating their participation in a wider maker community sharing commun values and a philosophies.

This discussion will explore, from a practitioner point of view, what makes the difference between a fab lab in a library and a collection of machine tools in a room, which teaching methods are the most favorable to the promotion of the maker culture and what practices promote the integration of our users into the maker community beyond our libraries.
